SHS Senior J J Metschke is Seward Rotary Club December Youth Rotarian

Seward High Senior, J.J. Metschke of Seward is the December Youth Rotarian was recognized and honored by the Seward Rotary Club at the December 11, 2020 Seward Rotary Club meeting at their Zoom meeting and presented with various mementos from Rotary and a book scholarship. He is the son of Amy and Jonathan Metschke.

JJ is an Honor Roll student at SHS with a GPA of 3.9 and enrolled in many Advance Placement classes over his high school career and currently enrolled in several dual credit classes.  In has been recognized with numerous P.R.I.D.E. awards over his high school career and participated in the local Quiz Bowl program at SHS.

JJ is a student athlete and very involved with the High School Baseball program, and was a Varsity Player on the SHS District Champion Team and a Varsity Starter on the Seward Legion District Champion Team.He has also been a longtime supporter and leader with the SHS Cross Country Team, involved since 2017.  He was a member of the SHS Freshman Basketball program as well.

One of JJ’s passions is his involvement with the local STRIV TV Program.  He was the first announcer for SHS sporting events.  He was selected to announce the Nebraska State Basketball Tournament in 2020 for the Class A and Class B Championships.  He is the STRIV announcer for the Seward Football, Volleyball, Softball and Basketball programs and he serves as a mentor for the younger announcer trainees.  He was selected to address the Nebraska Educators Conference about the STRIV program at SHS and assists in the preparation and production for the Seward High School’s weekly newscast.

He was selected to be an SHS Ambassador representing the class of 2021 and gives orientation of freshmen and new students/guests to SHS.  

JJ is a member of the SHS Speech Team and involved with the drama team “OID” and persuasive speaking.  He was the American Legion District 12 Oratorical Champion-twice and the First Runner-Up finalist in the Regional American Legion Oratorical Contest too.

He has participated in the SHS One Act program and served as an Office Aid –assisting the staff and administration in various daily duties.  

JJ is a member of the SHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and participates in a variety of FBLA Club activities, including community service and team building activities. 

JJ was selected to represent SHS and the Seward Rotary Club as a RYLA (Rotary Youth Leader Award) program, but it was canceled due to Covid-19.  He was also selected the SHS representative to the American Legion Boys State Program for this summer but is too was canceled due to Covid-19.  

He is a longtime member of the Seward Fourth of July Celebration Committee and currently serving as the Senior Youth Chair for the Seward Fourth of July Celebration Committee and represents the Committee at various events.

His work experience includes Premier Detasseling of Seward, working every summer in the fields since 2016.  He also has been employed by Faith Lutheran for video creations and sells shoes for FLIP J with an online shoe selling program.  

JJ is a member of the Rock Lutheran Church and a voice of the congregation, as well as part of the volunteer force in the congregation.  He is active in their Godparent program at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. 

His area of Service Above Self includes volunteering with the St. John Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School program, worked as a T-Ball Coach, coordinates the Rock Lutheran Church Live Stream programing and assists in the Mount Carmel Cemetery clean-up program, serves as a volunteer at Ridgewood Rehabilitation and Care Center and coached Youth Soccer, as well as projects for the Seward Rotary –such as “Stuff the Cruiser” and various Bluejay Booser Club.  

He has not decided on a college at this time, however he plans to enroll and study some aspect of business or business law, eventually hoping to become involved in the business community.  

JJ is now a finalist for the Youth Rotarian of the Year program and will be recognized again at the SHS Honor’s Night in the spring of 2021 and a finalist for the annual Rotary Youth Rotarian Scholarship.
