The Seward High Academic Decathlon Team Named for 2021-2022 Competition

The Seward High Academic Decathlon Team for 2021-2022 Competition has been selected to compete at the Nebraska Academic Decathlon Regional Contest on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 in a virtual competition at the SHS Library.  The contest will be monitored by members of the Seward Optimist Club.  The theme for the 2021-2022 Academic Decathlon is “Water-A Most Essential Resource!”

The 2021/2022 SHS Academic Decathlon Team members include Blake Austin, Damien Gligorevic, Nathan Hochstein, Owen Krahulik, Zander Nolan, Nathan Nottingham, Joseph Persinger, Jeanna Snyder, Gavin Sukup, Jack Wall, Ethan Wilkinson, and Emily Yelden and Coach Noelle Baker.

All the students will take the same online tests in seven categories.  The members of the team will compete in three divisions based on their grade point averages and each student will compete only with students with the same grade point average.  

The contest involves each student taking a series of on-line testing on the subjects of Science, Literature, Art, Music, Social Science, Economics and Mathematics.  Each student is also given the Jack London novel “The Sea Wolf” and will be required reading as part of the Literature test.  

The testing will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude by 1:35 PM, with lunch included.  The team will compete in the Large School Division and compete with schools across Nebraska.  The top two teams will qualify for the state contest, with the top two teams competing at the state level from the very small, small, medium, large and very large divisions.  

The Seward Optimist Club will furnish/donate a specially printed,  SHS Academic Decathlon Team Tee Shirt for each of the twelve student contestants. 

Noelle Baker, SHS Counselor, serves as the SHS Academic Decathlon sponsor and coordinator.   

The SHS Academic Decathlon Team is sponsored locally by the School District of Seward’s High Ability Learner Program (HAL) and the Seward Optimist Club.
