SHS Team A High School Quiz Bowl Team Places Fourth Spring “Underclassmen Only” Quiz Bowl!

It is one of the biggest Quiz Bowl contests in the state each year and Seward High Team A placed Fourth in the Large School Division at the Seward Memorial Library.  The SHS Quiz Bowl Team members included Molly Marroquin, Ben Nottingham, Dalton Mobley, Liam Krahulik, Abigail Moore, Brianna Potratz, Emma Matulka, Julya Metschke, Marisa Schmeckpeper, Sage Prochaska.  

The annual, GFWC NFWC High School Quiz Bowl was held at both the Seward Civic Center and Seward Memorial Library on Wednesday, May 3 at 9:00 am and finished at 4:00 pm.  The event hosted 65 teams in three tourneys –Small, Medium and Large school divisions-with Small and Medium Schools at the Civic Center and Large Schools at the Memorial Library.  The event featured a “Round Robin” format in the morning contests, where each school was guaranteed three rounds and a single elimination tourney in the afternoon.

The contest featured questions on math, science, history, art, literature and grammar-General Knowledge.  Each round lasted 15 minutes, with 40 toss-up and 40 bonus questions asked.  There were 11 rooms of contests going on at the same time in the Civic Center and the Seward Memorial Library.  

The winners in the contest included…

Large School-First Place-Elkhorn South-Team A-Coached by Abby Cleary, Second Place-Elkhorn North-Team A-Coached by Melissa Peterson, Third Place-Gretna Team A-Coached by Rick Arch, and Fourth Place-Seward High-Team A Coached by Melissa Pohl.

Medium School-First Place-First Place-Malcolm-Team A-Coached by Troy Pritchett, Second Place-Central City-Team B-Coached by Brandon Wright, Third Place-Fillmore Central-Team A-Coached by Ryan Kommenda, and Fourth Place-Oakland/Craig-Team A-Coached by Michael Menish.

Small School-First Place-Exeter/Milligan Team A-Coached by Jordan Marr, Second Place-Exeter/Milligan Team B-Coached by Jordan Marr, Third Place-McCool Junction-Team A-Coached by Jabe Wurtz and Fourth Place-Nebraska Christian-Team A-Coached by Dee Flynn.  

The volunteer readers for this quiz bowl included Sue Imig, Pat Ohlmann, Bonnie Kruse, Nathan Nottingham and Evan Nottingham-all from Seward, Jenni Erhart and Debbie Anderson of Osceola, Kathy Wilcox of Crete, Melissa Pohl of Utica and Nancy and Stan Meyer of Geneva.  Joanna Treas –GFWC Seward Woman’s Club President assisted at the registration table along with Karen Crandall of Papillion-the GFWC NFWC State President. Members of the GFWC NFWC hosted and coordinated the luncheon for the coaches and judges. Riley Nuttleman was the Quiz Master, assisted by Clark Kolterman.  Jean Kolterman assisted with the advance registrations.  Assisting at the Seward Memorial Library were Pat Gage of Aurora and Mary Jo Jarecke of Kearney-both representing the GFWC NFWC.

Schools participating in the GFWC NFWC High School Spring “Underclassmen Only” Quiz Bowl included Seward, Ashland Greenwood, Crete, Fairbury, York, Malcolm, Henderson Heartland, Friend, Dorchester, McCool Junction, Milford, Central City, Shelby-Rising City, Norris, Elkhorn High, Elkhorn North, Elkhorn South, Norris, West Point/Beemer, Howells/Dodge, Nebraska Christian, Nebraska Lutheran, Exeter/ Milligan, Ashland /Greenwood, Waverly, Fillmore Central, Bruning/Davenport, Johnson/Brock, Raymond Central, Ralston, Tri-County, Sandy Creek, Gretna, Wilber/Clatonia, Columbus Lakeview  and Hampton.

“We so appreciate the support of the area schools, the Quiz Bowl coaches/teachers, the readers, the judges, the helpers and of course the high school teams-who come together to showcase their team’s talents and compete both individually and as a team,” stated GFWC NFWC State President Karen Crandall.  “We also appreciate the kind reception and hospitality of the community of Seward and allowing us to use their beautiful Seward Memorial Library and Seward Civic Center for this very popular state event!  This event is a wonderful example of many, many volunteers working together to showcase student talent and it was a big success!  Thank you all!”

Any profits generated from this quiz bowl event will assist the GFWC NFWC in their efforts to help preserve the hospital of Dr. Susan LeFlesche Picotte of Walthill, Nebraska.
