The 20th Annual GFWC NFWC State “Girl’s Only” General Knowledge Quiz Bowl a Success

The 20th Annual GFWC NFWC State “Girl’s Only” General Knowledge Quiz Bowl is now “in the books” and declared a very successful happening.  The day featured 45 high school teams of “Girls Only” in a quiz bowl competition –in three school size levels.  The event is sponsored by the GFWC Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs, INC and was held in Seward at the Seward Civic Center all day on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

The morning activity divided schools by size and each team was offered three “practice” rounds in a round robin format.  The schools were then seeded in the afternoon’s single elimination tourney, with seedings being determined by wins and points generated in the morning and the highest scores.  The contest was based on general knowledge questions.

The afternoon event featured team’s competition for engraved trophies, with the first place team in each division receiving engraved medals as well.  There were three divisions-small schools, medium schools and large schools. There were eight quiz bowl rooms operating at one time.

Winners included…Small Schools-First Place-Dorchester-Team A, coached by Sandy Serverance, Second Place-Nebraska Lutheran Team A, coached by Hannah Zable, Third Place-East Butler, coached by Andrew Wood and Fourth Place-McCool Junction-coached by Jabe Wurtz.

In Medium Schools the winners were-First Place-Logan Magnolia, coached by Kathie Foreman, Second Place-Falls City Team A, coached by Jazon Vitosh, Third Place-Fillmore Central Team B, coached by Ryan Komenda and Fourth Place-Raymond Central Team A, coached by Courtney Polak.

Winners in the Large School division included-First Place-Elkhorn South Team A, coached by Abby Cleary, Second Place-Seward High Team A, coached by Melissa Pohl, Third Place-Seward High Team B, coached by Melissa Pohl and Fourth Place- Elkhorn North, coached by Melissa Peterson.

Readers/judges for the quiz bowl included Nancy Schulz, Sue Imig, Clark Kolterman and Pat Ohlmann of Seward, Nancy Meyer of Geneva and Kathy Wilcox of Crete.  Other volunteer reader/judges that assisted during the day were coaches of various teams-Andrew Wood of East Butler, Becca Pair of Norris and Abby Cleary, Melissa Peterson and the Elkhorn coaches, and Brandon Wright of Central City.

Riley Nuttleman of Seward was the Quiz Master, assisted by Karen Crandall-State President of the GFWC NFWC and Jean Kolterman-Seward-GFWC NFWC.  Clark Kolterman assisted in coordinating the program.

The morning round robin broke at noon, offering the students an opportunity to visit and dine together in Seward and shop.  After lunch, the contest began with a single elimination tourney. At noon, the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club hosted the coaches, judges and readers to a pizza lunch in the basement of the Civic Center-coordinated by Rene Chandler –GFWC Seward Woman’s Club.

High Schools participating in the annual tourney included Ralston, Seward, Elkhorn High, Elkhorn South, Elkhorn North, York, Norris, Bennington, Gretna and Gretna East.  Also part of the day was Kearney Catholic, Centennial in Utica, West Point, Central City, Oakland-Craig, Columbus Scotus, Fillmore Central, Raymond Central, Wibler-Clatonia, Falls City and Logan Magnolia of Iowa.  The small schools part of the day were McCool Junction, Howells-Dodge, Henderson-Heartland, Fullerton, East Butler, Shelby-Rising City, Sandy Creek, Nebraska Lutheran, Dorchester, Cross County at Stromsburg and Nebraska Christian. 

The contest was created 20 years ago by the GFWC NFWC to help young women continue to gain self-esteem and confidence.  The contest was established by Jean Kolterman,
