Hank Hughes Selected Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month
Seward High Senior, Hank Hughes was selected the October Youth Rotarian of the Month and recognized and honored at the October 18th Seward Rotary Club luncheon meeting at noon at the Jones Bank Auditorium. He is the son of John and Jana Hughes of Seward and lives near Garland.
Hank is a longtime member of the SHS Honor Roll and a leader in the SHS National Honor Society. He has been and still a leader in the Seward High Leadership Team (Student Council) since 2020 and also serves as an SHS Student Ambassador. He has taken and will be taking many AP/Dual Credit classes including “AP US History,” “AP Statistics,” as well as “Into to Psychology” and “Public Speaking” through Southeast Community College and “Writing and Research” in Dual Credit through Concordia University.
Hank has been an involved student, both in the classroom and with a variety of school activities and programs. He loves sports and has been a member of the SHS Basketball team for all four years. He is a leader on the basketball team and a multiple letterman. He was All Conference and Honorable Mention All-State last year with the SHS Basketball program.
He also enjoys the sport of soccer and has been part of the soccer program since 2022 and lettered in soccer multiple times.
Hank is an involved, four year member of the Seward High Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and participated in a variety of programs from their offerings. He has been an involved leader in the SHS Stock Market Challenge through FBLA and competed at the State FBLA Conference in Accounting and Technology testing.
He is also an active leader and member of the Seward High Skills USA program and is looking forward to the spring competitions. Last year he competed at the Skills USA State Contest in the area of Firefighting and Team Problem Solving.
He has been involved with Seward County 4-H for over a decade and also a member of the Seward County Junior Leader Program-serving as the group’s Treasurer for the last four years.
He has been a loyal member and voice of youth with his church Holy Savior Lutheran in Lincoln and also part of the local, St. John Lutheran Church Godparents program under the direction of Jenny and John Krause –participating for all four years of his high school career.
Hank has been employed as a detasseling crew worker for both Premier Detasseling and Team Elite and is currently employed at Hughes Brothers as an office assistant-working with blueprints, filing in HR, inventory, and wood identity. One of his favor assignments was to job shadow the President of the Company.
His “Service Above Self” volunteer hours revolve around the volunteer activities of the Seward County Junior Leaders, the SHS FBLA and the SHS Skills USA programs. He also volunteered to help at many Youth Basketball camps and was a counselor at the SMS Outdoor Education program. He has worked with new students in the Freshman Orientation and volunteered with the “Blue Jay Way Day” helping at the Goehner Seward County Historical Society Museum. He has also volunteered annually at the Goehner Volunteer Fire Department’s Spaghetti Feed and the GFWC Junior Women’s Club Craft Show.
His future plans include attending UNL for Business Management at this time in his decision process.
He was introduced and thanked by Rotarian Anita Foor for his work both in the classroom and community and presented with a bag of information and a Rotary Club banner for his graduation table. He will again be recognized at the May, SHS Honors Night as one of the ten Seward Youth Rotarian’s and is a finalist for the Youth Rotarian of the Year.
