Anna Hughes Selected October Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month

Seward High Senior Anna Hughes was selected the October Seward Rotary Club Youth Rotarian of the Month. She was welcomed and introduced at the October 14th Seward Rotary noon luncheon meeting at the Seward Civic Center. She is the daughter of John and Jana Hughes of Seward.

Anna is first a scholar, with a 4.2 GPA and currently ranks Summa Cum Laude, with an ACT Score of 32 and a member of the SHS Honor Roll for 12 consecutive terms.  She has taken and currently taking many AP classes and certified in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  She is a leader in the SHS National Honor Society and the school representative on the Seward School District board.

She is a three sport athlete at SHS, an involved leader in the SHS Volleyball program, the SHS Basketball team and the Seward Track team.  She has been a member of the SHS Volleyball program for four years and lettered both in 2018 and 2019.  She has also been a leader on the SHS Basketball team for three years, and lettered both in 2018 and 2019.  She also won a letter in SHS Varsity Track in 2018.  

Anna is President of the SHS Leadership team (Student Council) and has been involved in every aspect of the program, working on student leadership programs and school improvement, as well as a voice for the students at SHS.  She has been an SHS Ambassador since 2017.  

She is an active member of the SHS Skills USA since 2017 and competed in the Skills State Conference.  Her Skills USA State events were culinary arts, baking, and opening and closing ceremonies (OCC). She is also the President of the SHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), competed at state conferences and won Third Place in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge.  Her State FBLA competitions included various business presentations and accounting tests.

Her community leadership centers on her membership in the Shooting Stars 4H Club, a member since 2008.  She is the Past President of the club and been involved in almost every aspect of 4-H.  

She is a member of the Holy Savior Lutheran Church in Lincoln and active in the St. John Godparent program, having taught Vacation Bible School both at St. John Lutheran and Holy Savior Lutheran Church and also assisted the Summer Horizon’s Program in Seward. 

Her employment experience includes working for Premier Detasseling in 2016 and 2017, employment with Hughes Brothers in 2018 and a Lifeguard at Dowding Memorial Swimming Pool in 2019 and 2020.  She also has been a babysitter for many area families. 

Her “Service Above Self” community service involvement includes volunteering for many activities at both St. John Lutheran and Our Savior Lutheran Church, assisting with the Goehner Volunteer Fire Department at their annual Spaghetti Feed and working with many community service projects through the SHS FBLA, SHS Skills USA and her 4H Club. She has also volunteered for many youth summer camps in volleyball and basketball during her high school career.

After high school Anna’s plans include attending a college or university with a strong finance program but is undecided where she plans to attend college at this time, yet hoping to have an eventual  career in finance.

Anna was presented with several mementos from the Rotary Club, a Rotary banner and a book scholarship from the Rotary Club.  She is now a qualifier for the Seward Rotary Club’s Youth Rotarian of the Year scholarship.
