SHS Academic Decathlon Season Begins
The Seward High Academic Decathlon Team is announced and the season begins on Wednesday, January 14th at Seward High with the first in a series of on line testing competitions against other Nebraska area high schools of similar size. The students will begin there tests forbthe Regional contest.
The team members this year are SHS Seniors Lucian Gunn, John Wieseman, Nathan Kulhanek, Aamira Christian, Calvin Shipley, Shawn Corner, Cardin Gorake, Marshall Seevers, Alaina Bartels, Kayla Albright, Ava Slechta, Makennah Matulka- coached by SHS educator Noelle Baker.
The team is sponsored by The Seward Rotary Club and the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program (HAL).
Proctors for Wednesday are Rotary President- Amber Fiala and volunteer Riley Nuttleman.
The theme this year for Academic Decathlon is “The Roaring Twenties.” The students will be tested “on line” in Art, Social Sciences, Economics, Literature, Math, Music and Science. They are asked to read “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald and tested over it as well.
The Academic Decathlon Regional contest will be held in Seward on Saturday, January 17 at Seward High, with Seward High hosting the event for six high schools - to determine which schools will qualify for the state contest in Omaha.
Special “Seward Academic Decathlon Team” printed Tee Shirts are provided to each team member by the Seward Rotary Club, the co-sponsor of the program.
