Live Quiz Bowl Contests are Back! Literature 2020 Quiz Bowl for Nebraska High Schools a Success!

Seward High has two teams in Large School tourney at Seward Civic Center

Seward High School had two teams entered in the State Literature Quiz Bowl at the Seward Civic Center with members including Team A Rory Nolan, Kretyn Roth, Ella Gray and Andrew Alley and Team B Ross Brown, Elianah Underlich and Taylor Hostert-coached by SHS Teacher Melissa Pohl.

“We are excited to be allowed to again participate in these very competitive quiz bowls and look forward to a strong quiz bowl season!” commented SHS Quiz Bowl Coach Melissa Pohl.  “Seward has several wonderful Quiz Bowl opportunities because of the many volunteers that make it happen to serve the students of the area. We appreciate it and are glad to be back in the process.”

Twenty four area high school teams competed in the annual Concordia University Plum Creek Literature Quiz Bowl on Wednesday, September 16th, 2020 sponsored by the Nebraska English Language Arts Council (NELAC) at the Seward Civic Center in Seward.

There were three divisions in the contest- The Small School Division was won by Hampton High School –Team A coached by Gary Richards and Second place was awarded to Exeter Milligan High School-coached by Jordan Marr, Third place was a tie awarded to Osceola High and Hampton Team B.

The Medium Schools Division was won by Milford High School-coached by Sandra Meisman, Second Place was won by Oakland Craig High-coached by Michael Menish, Third was won by Cross County  High Team A and Fourth Place went to the Central City High Team B.

Large Schools, Medium Schools and Small Schools to make the event more competitive.  Winning First Place in the Large School Division was Norris High Quiz Bowl team A coached by Joe Hornung-Scherr, placing second was the Gretna Team B Quiz Bowl team-coached by Rick Arch, third was awarded to the Gretna High team A, and the Norris Team B placed Fourth overall.

The morning began with a round robin tourney, with each team involved in three to four matches and a single elimination tourney in the afternoon. All of the questions were Literature based and included some spelling, grammar and journalism questions as well.

Seward served as the host for the event.  Clark Kolterman was the volunteer coordinator and Charles Gebhart served as the tourney’s quiz master for the day, assisted by Riley Nuttleman and Phil Nevzorov.

The volunteer readers/judges for the event included Dr. Louis Reith, Clark Kolterman, Sue Imig, Pat Ohlmann and Dana Nottingham-all of Seward, Melissa Pohl of Utica, Brandon Wright of Central City, Rick Arch, and Ann Quinlan of Lincoln.

Trophies and individual team member medals were awarded to the First Place teams and a trophy was also awarded to the runner up team in each division. Participating schools included Gretna, Seward, Norris, Central City, Grand Island Northwest, Hampton, Friend, Kearney Catholic, Oakland-Craig, Exeter-Milligan, Milford, Heartland-Henderson, Centennial High- Utica, Osceola, Cross County and York.

“The Quiz Bowls were approved by the area “Four Corner’s Health” Department and the many suggestions and guidelines were followed.  Todd LaVelle and his Civic Center staff worked very hard to accommodate the Four Corner’s Health guidelines and it was appreciated.” Stated Quiz Bowl Chairman Clark Kolterman.  “We appreciate all who volunteered and worked to allow live- student quiz bowls to again happen in Seward. It was a great day!”

This is the 24th year the tourney was held in conjunction with the Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival, serving as a high school event for the festival-sponsored by the Nebraska English Language Arts Council (NELAC)-the official affiliate for Nebraska for the National Council Teachers of English.
