SHS 2026 Academic Decathlon Team was Recognized at Seward Rotary Club Meeting

The successful Seward High Academic Decathlon Team 2025-2026  was honored and recognized at the noon luncheon meeting of the Seward Rotary Club on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at the Jones Bank Auditorium.

The meeting was conducted by the Seward Rotary President Amber Fiala. 

SHS Senior, Lucian Gunn, Captain of the Seward Academic Decathlon Team introduced the team members and spoke on the program. He thanked the Seward Rotary Club for their support of the team and buying the team’s tee shirts.  The team wore their team shirts to the luncheon to show the Rotarians the special shirts they bought for the team. Attending were Lucian Gunn, John Wieseman, Nathan Kulhanek, Aamira Christian, Calvin Shipley, Shawn Corner, Cardin Goracke, Marshall Seevers, Alaina Bartels, Kayla Albright, Ava Slechta, Makennah Matulka.

Amber Fiala presented each member of the team a special, signed certificated of recognition and appreciation, congratulating the team members on their successful season and wishing them well after high school.   Mark Kolterman, Amber Fiala, and Clark Kolterman served as proctors for the team’s competitions online at the Regional and the local contests at SHS.  They will also be recognized again by Rotary at the annual SHS Honors Night in May.

Nine Students Compete at State Academic Decathlon from SHS attend the state conted and SHS was named First Runner-up at the State Contest in the Large School Division-Losing to Omaha Marian High School!

There were nine SHS students that traveled to Bellevue University to compete at the State Academic Decathlon on Saturday, February 21st, 2026.  The contest was to also be held on Friday, February 20th but canceled due to the weather.  Students were divided into three levels of competition-based on their GPA’s -Scholastic, Varsity and Honors - and asked the same test questions in a variety of categories.  The theme this year was “The Roaring Twenties.”

The students competed in a series of online tests in Art, Literature, Music, Math, Economics, Science, Social Science, and a Super Quiz Bowl event-plus wrote an essay as well.  They studied and were quizzed on the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Literature Test.

SHS students attending included: Team:  Calvin Shipley, Alaina Bartels, Cardin Goracke, Kayla Albright, Ava Slechta, Nathan Kulhanek, Marshall Seevers, John Wieseman, and Lucian Gunn. No alternates were allowed to attend the event.  The SHS team coach/sponsor is Noelle Baker -SHS educator. The team is sponsored by the School District of Seward-High Ability Learner Program (HAL) and the Seward Rotary Club.
